Dougal an 0-4-0 tank engine originally built by Andrew Barclay for the Provan gas works in Glasgow is due for a 10 year boiler examination.
This is a detailed examination to ensure that the boiler is in sound condition and that there are no parts that might be liable to fail in a sudden and catastrophic manner. To perform this task the boiler has to be lifted from the frames.
To get access to the boiler it is necessary to remove the coal bunkers, water tanks, boiler fittings, cladding sheets, glass fibre insulation, etc.
A team of 10 set to work shortly after 08:30 on 21st January
